One of the most important elements in 5th grade is learning to become a reflective, deep thinking writer for a variety of audiences and purposes. The trouble is, by this age, many students have started to believe they do not have what it takes to be a great writer. It may simply be that they have lost faith in believing they have anything to say that others care about, or they may not have found the right outlet or motivation. Using Web 2.0 tools to help students post and share their writing may be the ticket they need for authentic and engaging writing in order to see themselves as authors again.
A site I have found that offers fun and helpful writing Web 2.0 tools is http://jf20.wikispaces.com/Writing+With+Web+2.0+Tools. Whether it's using "Google Docs" to share, comment, and reflect upon their writing with other peers, "Quotes Cover" to help students find quotes to add to their writing, "Smore" that helps students create colorful flyers, "Bitstrips" for the more artist and visual learners, or a writing prompt blog from "Tumblr," teacher will find a plethora of resources students will find interesting and exciting to enhance their writing.
One of the blog sites that I follow that has great Web 2.0 writing resources and other great educational technology posts on such items as devices, using Diigo, and connecting the classroom, technology, and holidays is http://edutech4teachers.edublogs.org/2013/08/08/writing-with-web-2-0-tools/. By subscribing, following, and browsing the posts on this site, teachers will be able to collaborate and creatively design classroom lessons for writing using Web 2.0 tools introduced and featured here.
